Induction of EAE
On day 0, C56BL/6 mice received a subcutaneous injection in both rear flanks containing 200 µg of MOG35-55 peptide (MOG) (Amino acid sequence: M−E−V−G−W−Y−R−S−P−F−S−R−VV−H−L−Y−R−N−G−K; Synpeptide, Shanghai, CHN) and Complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) (Difco, Detroit, MI, USA), which contains 500 µg of desiccated non-viable M. Turberculosis (Difco, Detroit, MI, USA). Simultaneously, they received an intraperitoneal injection of 200 ng of Pertussis Toxin (PT) (List Biologic, Campbell, CA, USA). Mice received a second dose of PT two days later.

Immunofluorescence staining
For immunofluorescence staining, 30-µm-thick frozen sections were incubated with the following primary antibodies: rabbit anti-serotonin (5-HT, 1:2000, Sigma #S5545), rabbit anti-TH (1:500, Millipore #AB152), rabbit anti-tropomyosin receptor kinase C (TrkC, 1:500, Abcam ##ab43078), and mouse anti-synaptophysin (Syn, 1:1000, Millipore #MAB5258), rabbit anti-glia fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP, 1:1000, Abcam, #ab7260) and goat anti-cholera toxin B (CTB, 1:2000, List Biological Laboratories, #703). Signal was detected with the corresponding second antibodies conjugated to Alexa Fluor 405 or 488 or 594 fluorescence (1:1000, Invitrogen).
